Believer's Baptism Basics

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  (Matthew 28:19)

Our Lord commissions us to take the gospel to all people. Those who respond in faith are to be discipled, which includes instruction and baptism.

Baptism is comparable to a wedding ring.

Wearing a wedding ring does not make you married; but it does make a public statement that you have entered into a marriage covenant. In the same way, baptism is a public testimony that you have entered the New Covenant through placing your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior.
As it would be inappropriate to wear a wedding ring if you were not married – it is inappropriate for someone to be baptized when they have not yet placed their faith in Jesus Christ.

It is the policy of The Chapel to follow the Great Commission by restricting water baptism to those who have made a credible profession of faith in Jesus Christ. The Chapel does conduct dedication ceremonies for parents who desire to dedicate their children to the Lord, but we do not baptize a child or adult who has not yet come to faith.
Because baptism is a step of obedience to the Lord’s instructions, we do strongly encourage people who have come to faith but have not been baptized to do so even if they became Christians many years ago.

Baptism is a picture of the gospel.

Baptism by immersion is a picture of the spiritual reality behind it. A person who trusts Christ as Savior is crucified with Christ, buried with Christ and risen to new life in Christ. Romans 6:16 says to believers, In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Water baptism by immersion visually proclaims that the believer being baptized has been buried with Christ and is now alive in Christ.

If you have questions about baptism or would like to be baptized please contact a Pastor's Assistant at either location. We would be pleased to assist you in this step of obedience.
